Questions about diagnosis
- "Based on my symptoms, do you think I could have lipedema?"
- "What specific findings would confirm or rule it out?"
- "Can you assess the Stemmer sign and explain what the result means?"
- "Do I need any imaging or lab tests, or is this a clinical diagnosis?"
- "Are you familiar with the US Standard of Care for lipedema (Herbst et al., 2021)?"
- "Can you refer me to a lymphologist if you're not sure?"
Questions about conservative care
- "What compression class do you recommend, and can you prescribe it so insurance may cover it?"
- "Can you refer me to a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) for manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)?"
- "What exercise is best and what should I avoid?"
- "Is there a specific diet or anti-inflammatory eating approach you recommend?"
- "How long do I need to document conservative care before insurance will consider surgery?"
Questions about surgery
- "Am I a surgical candidate based on my current stage and health?"
- "What's the difference between tumescent liposuction, WAL, and PAL — which do you use for lipedema?"
- "How many lipedema surgeries have you performed?"
- "What results can I realistically expect, and how does that change with stage?"
- "What is the recovery timeline, and what are the risks?"
- "Can you write a Letter of Medical Necessity for insurance prior authorization?"
Tip: ask about volume
For surgery, experience matters. Ask specifically how many lipedema patients the surgeon has treated — not just general liposuction cases.
Questions about GLP-1 medications
- "Am I a candidate for a GLP-1 medication like semaglutide or tirzepatide off-label for lipedema?"
- "What evidence exists for GLP-1 in lipedema specifically?"
- "What side effects or contraindications should I be aware of?"
- "How would we monitor for muscle loss, and what should I do to protect muscle?"
- "Does GLP-1 replace surgery or complement it?"
GLP-1 off-label note
GLP-1 medications are not FDA-approved for lipedema. They're off-label, with no completed randomized trials in lipedema. Your doctor should explain the evidence basis before prescribing.
Questions about insurance and cost
- "Will you document my diagnosis and functional impairment in a way that supports an insurance claim?"
- "Can your office help with prior authorization, and have you done this before?"
- "What CPT and ICD-10 codes will you use?"
- "If I'm denied, will you support an appeal?"
- "What is the self-pay cost if insurance doesn't cover it?"
